Perfectly Imperfect: How Perfectionism Steals Your Joy – I confess—I often find myself striving for perfection, only to invite stress, disappointment and procrastination into my life. This week’s podcast is all about perfectionism, how it can hold you back and ways to recover from trying to be or make things so perfect.
In a world saturated with images of perfectionism on social media—immaculate homes, idyllic holidays, and flawless bodies—it’s natural to aspire to these standards. But when we fall short, we’re quick to criticise ourselves, driven by fear of failure and unrealistic expectations.
While setting goals and high standards isn’t inherently bad—in fact, it’s propelled me to achieve a lot—perfectionism often casts a shadow over me, hindering my ability to embrace spontaneity and take risks.
Can you recall moments when you’ve procrastinated because the timing wasn’t “perfect” or you didn’t feel ready? Various factors contribute to these thoughts, making perfectionism a daunting challenge. Poor time management, clutter, lack of preparation, and even external pressures sabotage our pursuit of perfection.
But life is unpredictable and messy. The elusive “perfect moment” is fleeting, as homes become untidy, laundry piles up, and plans are disrupted by unforeseen circumstances. It’s crucial to remind ourselves that perfection doesn’t exist and shouldn’t hold us back.
To overcome perfectionism, start by recognising that you are setting it as a priority. Challenge yourself to let go and embrace mistakes gracefully. Set smaller, more achievable goals, and remember that “good” is often sufficient.
Each day passes regardless of its perfection. Embrace it imperfectly, striving for improvement without letting perfectionism stand in the way of joy. Learning to embrace imperfection opens the door to a more fulfilling and joyful life.
